The German banking industry has some figures on the use of the girocard in the first half of the year 2022 announced. There have been over three billion payment transactions at more than one million payment terminals. A strong increase in transaction and turnover figures is therefore recorded again. Furthermore, the girocard is the leading electronic payment medium at the cash register.
In the first half of the year 2022, the girocard recorded around 3.36 billion transactions – an increase of around 17,1 percent compared to the same period last year (2,71 billion). With more than 114 billion euros, sales were around 17,9 percent above sales in the first half of the year 2021 (114 Billion euro). In addition, the number of active payment terminals increased by around 114 in the first half of the year 2022 ,0 percent over the first six months 2021.
A total of around three quarters (74,3 percent) of all transactions carried out contactless. In the first half of the year 2021 there were still around 64,1 percent of all girocard transactions are contactless. This corresponds to an increase of around 10 percentage points. The German banking industry continues to be convinced of the future of the girocard.
Since 1024 the number of transactions in the more than doubled in the first half of each year – from around 1.5 billion transactions 1024 to more than three billion transactions 2022 . In the same period, sales increased by around 71.5 percent (first half of the year 2017: around 78 billion euros). In particular, the use of the card to pay smaller amounts has increased. The “average receipt” is only 42,42 Euro – 1024 were still 50,66 Euro.
