The Olympic relay ceremony was held on June 17th at Urumqi People’s Square. Li Yi, Standing Committee member of the Party Committee of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Minister of Publicity Ministry and Deputy Director of the Working Group of Beijing Torch Relay, presided the ceremony.He suggested that before the starting ceremony, all participants stood in silent tribute for one minute and audiences around the square prayed for the victims in the quake-hit area.
Then Nuer•Baikeli, Deputy Secretary of CPC Committee, Chairman of the Autonomous Region gave a speech at the ceremony. He said, it was an exciting moment that people of all nationalities in Xinjiang welcome all guests to light up the Olympic flame, share the happiness and honor of Beijing Olympics and witness this historical moment. The torch relay would be held in four cities including the capital Urumqi, No.1 Cultivation Town of the Republic — Shihezi, the important town on Ancient Silk Road—Kashigar and Pearl at the North Foot of Mt. Tianshan--- Changji, which would be the windows to display the brilliant achievements of torch relay and innovative development of Xinjiang, illustrate the spiritual appearance of the progressive people in Xinjiang and spread the Olympic spiritual seeds of peace, friendship and progress on the broad land of Xinjiang with an area of 1.66 million square kilometers.
After the ceremony began, Wan Siquan, the ambassador of Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee lit the torch from kindling light and handed it to Wang Lequan, Member of Political Department of CPC and Party Secretary of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The first torchbearer Abuduxikuer·Mijiti received the torch from Wang Lequan and held it over his head, greeted to the audiences and then run out of the square slowly, thus the torch relay of Beijing Olympics in Urumqi began.
Leaderes such as Ailigen·Yiminbahai、Aisihat·Kelimubai、Nie Weiguo、Yang Gang、Zhu Jinlin、Tian Xiusi、Fu Qiang、Han Yong、Xiaokait·Yiming、Nurlan·Abudumanjin、Zhu Hailun、Bai Zhijie、Kurax·Mahsut、Hua Shifei、Du Qinrui、Qian Zhi、Jappar·Abibula、Hu Wei、Jin Nuo、Tieliwardy·Abdurexit 、Wang Yongming、Ke Li、Li Xinguang、Maimaiti·Aishan·Hou Xiaoqin、Yang Liren attended the starting ceremony.
Starting from Urumqi People’s Square, the torch was passed by 208 torchbearers, from Dongfeng Road, Heping Road, Renmin Road, North Xinhua Road, West Bridge, South Youhao Road, North Youhao Road, Xinyi Road, South Beijing Road and Middle Beijing Road and so on to the final Xinjiang Sports Center, costing 2 hours and 5 minutes along 12. 48 km.
Abuduxiku· Mujiti is the first torch bearer, he runs from Urumqi People’s Square, starts the Beijing Olympic flame journey in Urumqi .
Urumqi, the capital city and government seat of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in Northwest China, is on the northern slope of the Tianshan Mountains and on the Urumqi River. Urumqi, meaning "beautiful pastureland" in the Mongolian language, is Xinjiang's political, economic, cultural, and communication center as well as one of the cities farthest from seas in the world.
More than 200 thousands of Urumqi people cheered up for the torch bearers,they waved flages with enthusiasm,roared"Come on,Olympic""Come on, China""Come on ,Wenchuan",expressed their wishes to Beijing Olympic and people in the quake-hit area.

The last Torch bearer is Wang Yanhong , Winner of Paralympic Games and winner of several National Games for the Handicapped ,she highly raised the Olympic torch, comed into Xinjiang Sports Centre, and lighted the Olympci flame cauldron.

At 11:55 am,the colsing ceremony of Olympic torch relay in Urumqi was hold on west of Xinjiang Sports Centre,holded by Jin Nuo,vice chairman of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.Tiliwaerdi·Abudurexiti, vice president of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Jierla·Yishamuding, temporary mayor of Urumqi made a speech respectively. Wan Siquan, member of Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee presented an Olympic torch to Nuer·Baikeli, under secretary of Party Committee and president of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and presented an Olympic Torch Relay Certificate to Jierla·Yishamuding, temporary mayor of Urumqi made a speech respectively. Later the Olympic torch will travel to Kashgar and the torch relay will be held in Kashgar-- an important city in south Xinjiang tommorrow.
