News from Tianshan Net: (by Reporter Han Xue, Gao Lei and Photographer Zhang Xinjun) AtBeijingTime 9:40 on June 17, Beijing Olympic Torch Relay in Xinjiang started inUrumqi.

Thousands of audiences gathered around Urumqi People’s Square, shouting “Come on, Olympics!” and “One World One Dream”. At 9:40, when the ceremony began, all participants and audiences stood in silent tribute for one minutes.

After the ceremony began, Wan Siquan, the ambassador of Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee lit the torch from kindling light and handed it to Wang Lequan, Member of Political Department of CPC and Party Secretary of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The first torchbearer Abuduxikuer•Mijiti received the torch from Wang Lequan and held it over his head, greeted to the audiences and then run out of the square slowly, thus the torch relay of Beijing Olympics in Urumqi began.

Urumqi, ancient Junggar Mongolian, means "a beautiful pasture". It is located in the middle of the northernTianshanMountainand the southern edge ofJunggarBasin, and it is a central city ofAsia, the capital and political and cultural center of Xinjiang. The journey is about12.48 kmand takes 2 hours and 5 minutes with 208 torchbearers participating. At last, the fire-pan will be lit up at the westsquareofXinjiang SportsCenter and a celebration
