Synopsis
The story took place in the years between the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China. The Yin Family, the erstwhile most prosperous household in the central region ofShanxiProvince, was declining with only two members left a widowed Mrs. Yin and her son, the retarded young master. The head farmhand of the Yin Family was a snob who harbored an evil scheme to embezzle the Yin Family’s wealth. He deliberately schemed to set up his illegitimate daughter, Suanzao, the child bride of the retarded young master.
But, the beautiful and virtuous Suanzao was deeply in love with the industrious and intelligent young farmhand. Without her father’s approval, she was secretly engaged with him, with sour jujube as the evidence (Sour jujube’s Chinese name is jujube, same as the maid’s name) and encouraged the young farmhand to go to Xikou to do business. When the young farmhand came back with talents, he was appointed as the Chief Manager by Mrs. Yin. Suanzao was grateful and presented her lover with an embroidered punch filled with Jujubes. But nobody knew that the old farmhand stealthily put poison into the pouch.
On his way back, the young talented farmhand encountered jujube. In excitements he ate the poisonous Jujubes and died. Jujube was overcome by enormous grief and died together with her lover. On the ancient road to Xikou the couple composed a heart stirring love story for ages with their lives.
Act 1

Act 1
At the courtyard of the Yin Family, girls from affluent families and folk artists were gathered to celebrate the retarded young master’s birthday. Suddenly, the boy began to violently hit people around him, and hurt Suanzao who was attempting to stop him. Suanzao missed her young farmhand far away from home … The young farmhand rushed back to visit his beloved Suanzao, the young girl, however, upset by the fact that he left business behind and drove him away.
