Although Zhang Qian hadn't succeeded in his diplomatic mission,Wudi was fully aware of the importance of his travel. The government of Han Dynasty benefited tremendously from various data and information Zhang Qian gathered during his journey These materials were not only related to the countries he visited, but also recorded what he saw and heard on the way Apart from Dayuezhi, there were Dawan,Daxia, Kangju and several other important countries, such as Parthia (Persia, the present Iran), which Han Dynasty knew very little previously
In 115 BC Wudi once more organized a convoy of 300 men, also headed by Zhang Qian, to visit the country ofWusun (in present Barkash Lake Area), trying to persuade its ruler for a united war against Hun. On his journey Zhang Qian also dispatched his assistants to the countries of Dawan, Kangju, Daxia and Dayuezhi. After a year or so, these countries sent their representatives to Chang'an along with Han assistants.
Since then, Han Dynasty established official relations with the countries in the Western Regions. The exchange and communication with the Western Regions became increasingly frequent. Han Dynasty also sent messengers to Parthia (Persia), Kizil, Hindu (India), Tiaozhi (in the north-western part of the present Persian Bay) and other countries. There were many envoys and suites with credentials and silk cloths sent to visit the countries in the region. They often came across with each other on their way to different countries of their individual mission. They were well received in most host countries. Wusun even allowed the in-termarriage with Han people. Among the travelers to Western Regions, there were many merchants to follow the steps of Zhang Qian and his fellow envoys and many of them even disguised as members of imperial envoys.
Zhang Qian several times traveled to Western Regions over a period of 30 years. He devoted all his life to the establishment and development of the friendly relations between China and the countries in the west region. His health was damaged extensively due to the hardship he endured during his long years of traveling. One year after his last diplomatic mission, he died of poor health. History will remember forever this brave explorer and diplomat.
From Zhang Qian's first Xiyu mission to the last years of Western Han Dynasty, the Silk Road had prospered for 140 years. The frequent economic and cultural exchange between the East and the West promoted the development of societies in the region and the spread of civilizations along this east west corridor.
