KHARTOUM, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- A visiting Arab delegation put forward to the Sudanese government on Thursday an action plan for solving the crisis in the western Sudanese region of Darfur.
The delegation of the steering committee of the Arab initiative for solution of Darfur issue, which was established at a recent meeting of the Arab League in Doha, Qatar, raised the plan to Sudanese officials during a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The plan, according to a report of the official SUNA news agency, reaffirmed the principles of justice, the integrity of Sudan's lands and the interest of its people.
Qatari Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Abdullah al-Mahmoud, who heads the delegation, told reporters that the delegation exchanged with Sudanese officials technical and political views concerning the initiative.
Referring to unofficial contacts made by the Qatari government with the rebel movements in Darfur, the Qatari official noted that the response of the rebel movements to the Arab initiative was positive till now, adding that the rebel movements in Darfur had shown their welcome to the efforts of Qatar for solution of the Darfur issue.
He said the Qatari side would begin official contacts with the rebel movements soon.
The Qatari official expressed an optimism of his country for reaching a solution for the Darfur issue through the international and regional support offered to the Arab initiative, stressing the importance of contacts with Sudan's neighbors in boosting the Arab initiative.
Thursday's meeting was attended by Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Karti, Assistant Secretary General of the AL for Political Affairs Ahmed bin Hali, and African Union Commissioner of Peace and Security Ramadan al-Amamra.
Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ali al-Saddiq termed the meeting as the first step for launching the Arab initiative, noting that members of the steering committee came to Sudan with honest desire to work for the interest of Sudan's unity, which was a juncture between the Arab world and Africa.
He affirmed that Sudan welcomed the Arab initiative, adding that Sudan was keen to achieve solution of Darfur issue through clear vision and honest orientation. |
