TBILISI, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. naval flagship Mount Whitney has arrived at the Georgian port of Poti on Friday, agencies reported, quoting Georgian officials.
U.S. officials said earlier that the warship is carrying humanitarian aid for Georgians.
According to a statement released earlier by the U.S. embassy in Tbilis, the vessel was scheduled to arrive at Poti at 1700 local time (1300 GMT) on Friday.
An unnamed U.S. official confirmed to AFP that the flagship has arrived at Poti, although "anchoring procedures are still ongoing."
The USS Mount Whitney, a sophisticated command warship, is the third U.S. vessel transporting humanitarian aid to Georgia after its military conflicts with Russia.
Russia, whose warships and forces are also deployed near the port, said earlier that it did not plan any military response to the increased presence of U.S. ships in the sea. |
