Of late days, the first-phase project of Urumqi- East Junggar Basin railway started to lay rail in Xiaohuangshan railway station of Fukang City. This project starts at Xiaohuangshan railway station and reaches Multicolored Bay in the northeast with a total length of 95 km.

As the key construction project of XJ while implementing the great west development strategy, Urumqi-East Junggar Basin railway starts at North Urumqi railway station-feeder line in north XJ, passes Urumqi City, Fukang City, and finally ends at Multicolored Bay and East Junggar Basin. It is about 393 km long.  Urumqi- East Junggar Basin railway will mainly serve for coal resource exploration and thermal power and coal chemical construction in East Junggar Basin, and push forward the economic development of counties and cities along the northern slope of Tianshan Mountains.
