There is a special group in Xinjiang, which is called “Xinjiang Production & Construction Corps”. The corps is not soldiers for war, it bears the responsibility of reclamation and guarding the frontier endowed by the state, is the major force of economic construction in Xinjiang. With one seventh population of Xinjiang, the Corps created the one fifth agricultural output value of Xinjiang, provided almost half goods source for export, cotton and ketchup are all products for export, and seven listed companies. Forty or fifty years ago, while the agricultural reclamation soldiers of the Corps and their family staff came to Xinjiang, wasteland and weeds were everywhere. Lived in the cave or tent, through dragging and transporting piggyback, they constructed reservoir, digged canals, leveled fields, planted forest belt, built houses, constructed roads, established a huge area of fine farms, produced brand new cities one by one. Today, while walked by Agricultural Reclamation Areas of the Corps of Xinjiang, China including Alar Agricultural Reclamation Area, Xiaohaizi Agricultural Reclamation Area, Tieganlik Agricultural Reclamation Area, Shihezi Agricultural Reclamation Area, Wujiaqu Agricultural Reclamation Area, Beitun Agricultural Reclamation Area, Tacheng Agricultural Reclamation Area and Kekdala Agricultural Reclamation Area, it is very hard to believe that these places are barren land and desolate several decades ago. While wandering on streets of Shihezi City, Kuytun City, Wujiaqu City, Alar City, Tumushuke City, it is very hard to believe these cities of the Corps are so young.
