Tarim River is China's largest inland river,with a total length of 2,179 km(1321 km long of the main stream , 850 km long in the territory of Bayangol Prefecture ),It is componented with the Aksu River, the Yarkant River , the Hotan River ,the Kashgar River ,the Tarim River and the main source .The average annual flow of surface water of the source is  31.25 billion cubic meters (The runoff of Tarm river  in the territory of Bazhou is 2.3 billion cubic meters of annual).The basin area is of 517,300 square kilometers, the river valley distributed to five states, 27 counties and cities, 55  farm bureau of the four  Corps division, with the total population of 7.8 million, takes about half of Xinjiang's total population.1,735 acreage  irrigated area,which   is a major oil, natural gas, grain, cotton, fruits, animal husbandry production bases of Xinjiang.

Because of the excessively wasteland reclamation on the upper reaches of the Tarim River , and a lack of  management in the middle reaches , and the dissipation of water has increased,which lead to a significant reduction in water of  the lower reaches of the mainstream, the 320 km  below of the Daxihaizi Reservoir has been drying up for more than 20 years.The average flow of the Tarim River, in 1950s was 4.935 billion cubic meters,Since the 1990s, it decreased to 4.036 billion cubic meters.

In order to  to improve the ecological environment of Tarim Basin,benefit  the people of all nationalities in Xinjiang and accelerate the development of Xinjiang,The nation will include Tarim River comprehensive management project into the "Ten-Five" Plan,and site as the implementation of the western landmark projects, speed up the pace ,invest 10.7 billion yuan.basically completed the task in five years.
