The Sugong Ta is also konwn as Emin Minaret, full name being EminHezhuo(?-1777)Gratitude Minaret, located in Muna village 2 kilometers on the eastern outskirts of Turpan city.The minaret was built by Emin Hezhuo with his money of 7000 liang silver,to show his gratitude for the good treatment received from the Qing Dynasty,and his devotion to Allah, as well as to let the later generations remember him of his life contributions. The second year after his death, his second son Sulaiman helped in the fulfillment of his last wish and the minaret was completed in 1778 and since then more than 200 years have past.According to the history of Qing Dynasty,Emin Hezhuo was originally a leader in Turpan for religious as well as secular affairs.He helped the Qing in suppressing the rebellions of Junggar.Burhanidin and Hojajahan,for which he was successively rewarded by Emperors Yongzheng (reigned 1723-1735) and Qianlong(1736-1795 reigned) with duke titles as Fuguo duke, zhengguo duke and county king with an Edict making these "hereditary".
The Sugong Ta was the largest existing ancient minaret in Xinjiang, all built with green gray bricks. At the entrance, there is a monument with inscriptions in Uygur and Chinese language giving the reason for the construction. The minaret is 44 meters tall; the diameter of its foot is 10 meters, diminishing in width upwards in a cone shape. Inside, there are the 72 steps of a spiral stair leading to the top of the minaret. There are 14 windows arranged in different heights and directions round the body of the minaret. The surface of minaret is decorated with layered geometric patterns of up to 15 types such as triangles, 4 petal flowers, water ripples and diamonds etc, representing strong Islamic architectural style.
The minaret is one of the most beautiful buildings in Xinjiang. Its maker has made it so that the blue sky has become one of it composite elements. The earthen yellow color of the minaret presents a semblance to resin under the heaven, giving a sense of holiness and sanctity, contrasting to and deepening the blueness of the sky. The minaret was not as complicated in design as most of the other Islamic architecture; it was a product of a style of extreme simplicity.
As a typical Islamic architecture, its original location was however an ancient site of ritual performance for Buddhists.When Islam with its strict religious rules entered Central Asia,the Muslims often built their places of worship on the former sites of Buddhist temples.
The minaret has a height of 37 meters, with no tiers. On the center of the minaret is a support pillar made of bricks, which is surrounded by 72 steps of a spiral stair leading to the top of the thousands of people to wordship here,and together with the minaret forms a unifying structure. The mosque is flat-topped,in a square shape,forming a forming a harmonious landscape with the cylindrical tower.The entire body is built with solid bricks in layered patterns of Central Asian style; there is no other decoration.The bricks are made of Turpan loess built structure can be preserved intact. |
