A young man once remarked to me that since there are so many KFC' s and other fast food restaurants in Urumqi,I must feel right at home.This is one of two common misapprehends.The second is that fast food is more suitable to the western lifestyle.According to recent research,the culture of fast food is more popular in Asia than anywhere else.

The AC Nielson Group is an international research organization, which recently conducted an international online consumer survey.It found that 35% of Americans patronize fast food restaurants on a monthly basis.However, 61% of residents of Hong Kong and 41% of residents of mainland China do the same.In fact, according to the survey nine of the world' s top ten markets for fast food are in the Asia-Pacific region.

Despite the fact that cheese burgers, pizza and fried chicken are part of American cuisine,they do not represent the best on the menu.In my family, a good quality American meal starts with a fresh' green salad with homemade vinai-grette sauce followed by lobster bisque. The main dish will be a small tender loin steak with a side of boiled broccoli covered with melted cheese,and fresh rolls.This is all washed down with a bottle of California red wine.

McDonald' s has become a symbol of this modem lifestyle.When the first store opened in Kuwait City in 1994, for example, there was a line ten kilometers long. As an American, I cannot under stand this because for me McDonald' s is a symbol of the negative side of modemization.I hope I never see it in Urumqi.If it does come,I will certainly not feel more at home.
