(tianshannet) Updated: 2006-November-23 16:51:44

The Bayinbulak grassland is located on the southern slope of the Tianshan Mountains, within the boundaries of Hejing County in the Bayingoleng Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture. It covers an area of 8 million mu and is the second largest grassland of China. At elevation 2500 meters,it is called "The Great Grassland on top of the Tianshan Mountains".

The location of the reserve is the converging point of the northern and southern slopes of the Tianshan Mountains, surrounded by towering peaks, its center is an alpine grassland swamp belt that covers over 1000 square kilometers on which flocks of horses, herds of cows, sheep, and yak leisurely graze on the green expanse. The snowmelt from the sur-
rounding mountains feed dozens of rivers and endless springs, forming an alpine lake area that covers over 1000 square kilometers that glitters under the sun and winds like a giant dragon. Here is the renowned Tianshan Swan Lake. Each year at early spring, swans fly here from the south to pass the best season and breed their young. Swan Lake provides them with all the conditions they need and so year after year, these birds return. on the lake and its surrounding grassland are over 70 species of birds, with summer migrating birds in the main, such as natatorial birds, wading birds, birds of prey and song-birds, 7 of which have beenlisted as rare birds on the state level.
