Lake Bosteng is also known as Lake Bagrax. It is located southeast of the Yanji Basin which is on the southern slope of the Tianshan Mountains,and is China's biggest inland freshwater lake. It stretches 58 kilometers east to west,and 28 meters north to south,with an average epth of around 10 meters, and 16 meters at its deepest, at elevation 1048 meters. To the west of the lake are the smaller lakes of Lamuk, Aziti, and Ahunk which cover an area of 52 square kilometers.There are 400 square kilometers of marshy regions around the lake and a rarely seen peat field with a reserve of 290 million tons. The total water surface of the lakes cover 1228 square kilometers. There are rich resources in the lake area such as grass and birds.The reeds here reach over 10 meters tall and its growing area covers 600000 mu in which are patches of wild water lily, the habitat for various kinds of water fowl. The lake also produces salt and fish, and is an important fishery base of Xinjiang.
