The earliest pottery in Xinjiang,dating back 3000 years, were found in ruins in Altai, Qoqek, Mulei, Heshou and other places. Along the Tianshan Mountains from east to west,in Balkun, Yiwu, Hami, Mulei, Turpan,Qitay, Urumqi,Hejing, Luntai, Baicheng, and south to Hotan and Pishan, west to the Ili River region,colored pottery was discovered in ruins and burial grounds.Archaelogists have determined that these colored pottery date back to about 3000 years,to around the Neolithic Age and was still discovered in burials of the Western Han Dynasty. There were containers, pots, cups,bowls and plates.A special feature about the pottery is that many of them had handles and that most of them had black drawings on red, and some also had orange or white surface with red floral designs. These designs were mostly triangles from solid inverted triangles to big triangles in net designs, or inverted triangle changing into whorl shapes, verticalor horizontal, short parallel lines, or lines resembling the bark of trees, or curved lines,wavy lines or chess-board lines. The colored pottery unearthed in East Xinjiang reflect influence from the Gansu area in shape,design and production, and shapes.
