(tianshannet) Updated: 2006-November-20 16:17:50

There is an abundance of rock art throughout the Altai, shan, and Kunlun Mountains, on the hills of the Tarim and Junggar Basins. among which the most to be found are on the slopes of the AItai Mountains. The content of the rock art reflect the way of life of the ancient peoples of Xinjiang, and also depicted the natural world with flying birds and stalking beasts. The most note worthy rock art is that at Kangjiashemenzi of Hutubi which was discovered inrecent years. It is a major piece of rock art depicting phallicisrn. On a rock face of about 120 square meters are carved over 300 figures, most of which show copulation and dancing. Experts believe that this rock art can be dated from the Stone Age to the 12th or 13th century, but it needs a more accurate and scientific method of dating to verify its actual age.
