The diversiform-leaved poplar, also known as Hutong, is an ancient variety of poplar. It is mainly distributed in Central Asia and regions in Northwest China. The diversiform-eaved poplar is a tall, deciduous tree which, when matured, can reach above 15 meters tall, some even reaching 30 meters with a trunk diameter of 2 meters. The diversiform-leaved poplar has a strong propagating capacity and fast growth. It also has remarkable endurance for heat, cold, drought, flood, salt and alkali, and strong resistance against wind andsand. In China, the diversiform-leaved poplar is most widely distributed in Xinjiang, covering the biggest area, and is richest in resources, mainly distributed in the Tarim Basin. Its coverage, its con-centration, and its even distribution is un seen else-where in the world. It is considered Xinjiang mainforest resource and a pillar in the desert ecosystem. The over 3 million mu of diversiform-leaved poplar forests along the shores of the Tarim River have formed a corridor-like forest belt endowing the barren desert with unlimited vitality and stabilizing the shifting sand dunes and moderating the climate of the Tarim Basin, hence playing animportant role in protecting the fields. That is why they are so loved by the people who named them"warriors of the desert".
