Kashgar, as a critical junction on the Silk Road, the first point of arrival on the ancient overland routes from Pakistan and Kirgyzistan, and the meeting point of three empires has long been an important destination for traders and travelers alike.
The hotel industry in Kashgar has developed mainly to cater to both tourists in the area and to Pakistani traders arriving here from over the Karakoram Highway. Many of the hotels are equipped with modern facilities but maintain local features. Prices range from between RMB100 to RMB500. Many hotels will give discounts, especially during the off-peak season.
The Seman Hotel is a charming place, housed in the renovated former Russian consulate. The Gilgit International Friendship Hotel serves good Pakistani cuisine and the Qiniwak Hotel is popular with western tourists and the best option for budget travelers.
Living outside the city is inconvenient. For those who like to really get to grips with nature, it is a good idea to plan your itinerary ahead or bring your sleeping bag along, as camping in the nearby countryside is a viable option.
